Antique Furniture – A Buyers Guide

Author:  /  Category: Furniture

You can add style to your home with distinctive antique furniture, but what should you think about before you buy that special period antique?

An antique is classified as a piece of furniture that is older than 100 years and has retained an appeal to the buyer. Georgian period items, Regency furniture, Victorian and Edwardian pieces offer their own distinctive style to fit with the surroundings of many modern homes.

Scarcity of antique furniture reflects the values of antiques. A rare antique will be higher in value. Be sure you are buying from a reputable buyer, LAPADA (the Association of Art & Antiques Dealers) antique dealers observe the codes of practice set down by the association so that you can buy antiques with confidence and peace of mind.

The condition of an antique will affect its value. Do not be tempted to buy ‘flawless’ antiques that have been thoroughly refurbished. The effects of ageing reflects the genuine nature of an antique. Antiques look their best in their original condition (provided they have been well cared for). The originality of antique furniture is what makes an antique retain its value.

You can now find a lot of information about antiques on the internet, for example, searching for Victorian furniture will show a plethora of sites, and will provide an indication of price range (depending on the condition of the antique). But remember, if the antique piece looks perfect, it is unlikely to be genuine (it may be a reproduction), or has had its value reduced by ‘over-enthusiastic’ refurbishment.

The internet is a useful source of information; however exercise care when buying antiques online. A first hand look at the antique product is not possible on the internet and the website photos may hide possible defects and deficiencies. A reputable antiques dealer will be happy to send you detailed photos to highlight any blemishes with the antique furniture.

Buying from a reputable antique dealer will reassure you that the antique is genuine, a certificate proving its originality (provenance) may also be provided.

When you have purchased your antique, take care to handle and care for it appropriately. Your dealer will be able to offer advice on its care and maintenance. Make sure you avoid over zealous cleaning of your antique, this removes the ‘patina’ (develops over the aging process) that adds value to your antique.

Be Discerning, Buy Quality Antiques

Characteristics of Gothic Furniture

Author:  /  Category: Furniture

Gothic furniture is a very beautiful, unique type of artwork that exemplifies Gothic architecture at its best. This style is also known as the French style of architecture. Some characteristic features of this bold architectural style are the use of heavy, dark woods, flying buttresses, pointed arches, and ribbed vaults. These elemental designs are also present in gothic furniture just on a much smaller scale. They translate it all as scroll work, or woodcarvings often times present with decorative creatures such as gargoyles and dragons.

Gothic furniture can be found all over the world due to its international appeal. You will be able to find this style furniture at any type of specialty store in just about any city. Shopping for Gothic dining chairs or tables can be a very rewarding process because this type of furniture is quite dramatic and ornate. The main consideration to take is scale. If you have a smaller dining room, you do not want to overpower the space with large Gothic renderings. Instead, you should aim for smaller tables and chairs that will better complement the Gothic architecture in your home.

There are additional accent pieces you can get in the Gothic style that are quite lovely. Gothic accent pieces can include anything from Gothic bookcases to end tables and candle stick holders. You can accent the beautiful Gothic architecture perfectly with just a few pieces. This is a great way to avoid overpowering the space while giving it that bold, Gothic grandeur affect.

Furniture Decor – Country Style, Anyone?

Author:  /  Category: Furniture

Warmth, comfort and that rustic feeling of being home are what describe country furniture. Country bedroom furniture, in particular, is every bit welcoming and makes coming home such a pleasurable prospect. This style is made possible by skilled craftsmen who make pieces that aren’t only attractive but dependable as well. These may include anything from handcrafted items to aging antiques that usually come in simple designs.

When you decide to buy country home furniture, you’ll find that it is a practical option. The pieces you need to create that effect will not be expensive. However, when you stick to straight country, you might find it monotonous and unexciting over time. That’s why it’s always a good idea to try and experiment on many combinations. Try having a contemporary or traditional twist to the look. This should add to the whole look’s appeal.

If you’re currently looking out for furniture that goes along this direction, it would be best to pay attention to wood characteristics that make it unique. As you may know, wood is the mainstay or staple of every country design. Hand crafted oak, pine or cherry wood furniture are always a delight to have. And while it may be tempting to make them shine, these woods are classier and more appreciated for their natural tempered sheen.

When you want your home styled warm and rustic, a country-inspired theme would be perfect. This will have simplicity as its main attraction. It usually banks on straight lines, round knobs and some timeworn pieces. Furniture with some chips and scratches also add a certain dimension and make everything look “seasoned.”

What makes country style furniture unique is the fact that it almost always comes in natural materials. Thus, anything shiny or polished will not be a good fit. However, you can do many things to create that inviting look in any living space. For your bedroom, have a four poster canopy bed. For your kitchen, have cabinets with ceramic knobs. In your living room, a grandfather chair is just perfect for adding that distinctive country flavor.

Top Kitchen Design Tips To Increase The Value Of Your Property

Top Kitchen Design Tips To Increase The Value Of Your Property

A well designed kitchen can greatly enhance the appeal and hence value of your property. When developing a property, you need to have a good plan in place. Each room in your property needs to have its own work schedule and budget. This is especially true for the kitchen which in a lot of properties is the most popular room in the house.

When designing your kitchen, you must consider:

1. storage space

How many cabinets are needed for the size of the room? How many shelves are required in the cabinets? What will be the locations of these cabinets?

You must also decide how these cabinets will fit around essential appliances in the kitchen.

2. lighting

The kitchen needs to be bright and airy. A dark and musty kitchen is not only unattractive but can also be unhygienic.

Kitchens need specific lighting for the purposes of food preparation. Ambient lighting serves as general lightning that gives the overall kitchen illumination. The best thing to use here is some sort of fluorescent tubing arrangement.

You can obtain direct lighting, for example aimed at the cooker and kitchen sink, by using conventional recessed lights, surface lights or light fixtures that are on a pendant or chain.

3. appliance space

In addition to the major appliances such as cookers and refrigerators, you also need to design in the locations of microwaves, televisions, telephones etc. These additional items can increase the beauty of your kitchen and help you to sell a lifestyle aimed at the upper end of the market.

4. the work triangle

This connects the three major points of a kitchen: the cooker, refrigerator, and the sink. The longer the distance between these points, the greater the effort required by the potential user.

There are 5 basic shapes to any kitchen design:

1. Single wall

The one-wall or single wall kitchen has all the work centres along one wall, which gives the least efficient plan. This type of kitchen is best for small homes and apartments.

2. L-shaped

The L-shaped kitchen gives a huge amount of continuous counter top space. In this style of kitchen, the work centre is on two adjacent walls, a natural triangle is formed and the traffic bypasses the work area. Space permitting, this design allows for the inclusion of a dining area.

3. U-shaped

In a U-shaped kitchen, a continuous countertop and storage system surrounds the cook on three sides providing maximum efficiency. Traffic flows around the work area not through it and simplifies the cooking process.

4. G-shaped

This is generally a modification of the U-shape but adds an extra wall of cabinets and appliances as a peninsula or fourth partial wall.

5. Corridor/Galley

This plan offers a single cook-efficient workspace with closely grouped work centres on parallel walls.

When designing your kitchen, you should consider the above as a minimum to ensure a quality final product that not only provides a great working environment but also adds value to your property.

Scandinavian Furniture – Moving Into Modernism & Function

Author:  /  Category: Furniture

Scandinavian furniture is known for its modern approach to design and function. Beginning in the late 1950′s with the introduction of modern manufacturing facilities and processing Scandinavia became the center for a movement in design that became synonymous contemporary looking furniture with clean lines and built in comforts that were engineered into the furniture.

Scandinavian furniture gets its origins from of course Scandinavia. Scandinavia consists of the countries of Norway, Sweden & Finland. Denmark which is to the south of these countries on the northern most European mainland peninsula is also considered to be part of the Scandinavian region. Nordic furniture is also used unambiguously sometimes to refer to furniture made from the region

Scandinavian designs came into their own in the 1950′s. The Lunning Prize which was awarded to outstanding Scandinavian designers 1951 through 1970 and recognized top Scandinavian furniture makers who defined the profile of Scandinavian made furniture. The Lunning Prize was named after Frederik Lunning and two recipients were chosen each year by a group of their peers from Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland as recognition of establishing new Scandinavian furniture concepts both at home and abroad and led to many of the modern styling’s associated with the creations of these top Scandinavian designers.

To define Scandinavian furniture requires us to look at what makes a piece of furniture fit into this specific category. Behind every piece of Scandinavian furniture is the belief that functional every day products should not only be affordable to the wealthy but to everyone. This movement in the 50′s or the post World War 2 era took on the name of Social Democracy as many of the production techniques used during the war were starting to be applied to many industries including furniture. This is the primary theme found in Scandinavian designed furniture in that it offers both modern looking designs and provides function to the user. Much of Scandinavian designs make use of form pressed wood which is configured into smooth shapes and designs. Anodized enameled aluminum which can be formed together into unique and functional designs is used throughout Scandinavian furniture. Pressed steel which often provides an industrial look to many of the modern Scandinavian designs is also used to create these many contemporary pieces.

Today’s Scandinavian furniture manufacturers carry on these traditions in furniture design by creating modern, contemporary designs. These stay true to the designs and ideas expressed in the 1950′s but apply modern manufacturing and materials to create styles and designs for today’s furniture consumer. This furniture also takes the ideas and beliefs that it must be functional and incorporates new designs and features that people today need. Homes are becoming more modern and furniture much also do the same by providing the consumer with features and benefits they need in a changing world. These qualities best express today’s Scandinavian furniture and are the reasons that this furniture as a category continues strong today.

Primitive Country Furniture and Decor

Author:  /  Category: Furniture

Primitive country furniture brings a harmonious balance into your home with the rest of your decor. These hand-crafted, rustic, and pre-aged furnishings provide warm and welcome comfort to your family and your visitors. For decades the cabin decor, Adirondack, and mountain lodge styles have been known as the least imposing and most comfortable styles available to the country decorator. Primitive country furniture will blend nicely with other similar decorating styles such as the ones listed above and even Arts and Crafts, Mission Movement, French Country and Craftsman furniture. Now, through the incomparable woodworkers of the Amish communities, you too can recreate the surroundings of the great outdoors in your own country home. Your furniture will be understated with simple classic lines.

Cloth and paint colors are neutral or in early Americana colors. The primitive furniture and pillows will be cozy and overstuffed. In the old days, many primitive country furnishings were made from twigs, branches and other natural elements – so look for earthy colors and uneven tones. Primitive country furniture series has tables, chairs, desks, armoires, nightstands, dressers, benches, beds, and thick wood coffee tables. You’ll find them painted, raw, aged, or in artisan hand crafted, old fashioned, traditional designs. The primary feature of this style country furniture is the use of materials from reused pieces, barns, and posts. Planks are old, or fashioned to appear vintage or antique. Some primitive furniture has been created and decorated with bark, branches and twigs. Each log and twig is especially chosen for their shape and texture – right down to the decorative trim. The chunky wood styles of primitive country furniture lend themselves easily to armoires, wardrobes and big tables. Big chests and trunks also double as an innovative coffee table or bench for the foot of the bed.

In the double drawer wardrobe you’ll find much more than a closet. Plain oval dining tables with benches make excellent primitive country dining sets. The wooden wall cupboards, wardrobes, plate racks, and hutches give your dining room a comfortable, country style. Or, place a rectangular work table in your kitchen, and use antique kitchenware for your cooking and serving – this brings back memories of an old farm house, doesn’t it? Use traditional lighting and chandeliers for a truer experience – with those roughly finished cupboards and racks nearby the kitchen experience will be rustic, homey, warm. There are many different ways obtain primitive country furniture, and they aren’t all expensive! Buying used furniture and roughing it up to age it, or overstuffing and recovering larger pieces are two easy and inexpensive alternatives.

This repurposing of existing furniture is also good for the environment. Just because your existing piece of furniture isn’t working for you today, doesn’t mean that it can’t be changed to work for you in the future. For instance, a friend of mine was given an ugly outdated, veneer covered entertainment unit. It was large and just what she needed for her dining room to display her plate collection and cookbooks. We spent 1/2 a day sanding, painting and aging the piece and today everyone asks where they can get primitive country pieces just like hers! Country decor is possible with all the rooms of your house. You can decorate your home wholly or partially in the country style.

So take a look at your existing furniture with a creative eye and consider some of the ways below to changing it to suit your style: Paint, then sand and stain. You won’t believe how different a piece of furniture can look once sanded, painted and stained. You can even change the style of the piece. A cheap wooden Ikea table turned into a beautifl primitive country coffee table (years after use) with a thick application of crackle paint and whitewash finish. Outdated dressers can also change. Change the hardware. A few vintage, restoration or antique handles, hinges or pulls can turn a piece of wood furniture into a rustic masterpiece. Similar to painting, staining and sanding, old glass balls or brass handles add primitive to any previously country furnishing. One of my favorites is to re-upholster or re-cover a sofa, chair, loveseat or footstool. Thick primitive fabric is now easier to come by than ever before (or just look for muslin) to update a piece of furniture.

If you don’t think you have the skill to re-upholster a piece, shop around for some country slipcovers – instant change. Buy antique or vintage pieces. Besides being environmentally friendly, those deals fit right into primitive country decor. Rather than spending $2000 and more on a new couch or dining set, why not shop around for something similar, but gently used? Primitive country furniture is available at affordable prices and will lend that welcome air to any room of your home. Country decor reduces the modern air to most homes and apartments – enhancing the peaceful and authentic nature of your home and your family members.

Buy and Sell Furniture

Author:  /  Category: Furniture

You can buy and sell furniture to change the appearance of your home. Buying furniture for your home can be a stressful but rewarding exercise that can consume a lot of time looking for just the right style and colors to match your new look. Perhaps you’ve just moved and don’t have enough furniture to fill your new home. In this case you have a lot more flexibility but with endless choices, it’s good to have a design idea in mind before heading to the furniture stores. It may be just time for you to update your old furniture with some new.

A change of furniture can significantly alter the feel of any room and certainly have a big impact. You can also buy furniture just to fill a bare spot in your room in which case your choices will be narrowed to only something that works with your existing furniture in that room. There are many factors to consider, including but not limited to: color, material, pattern, species of wood, sheen, etc. Also important to consider is whether you are interested in something contemporary or possibly an antique or antique reproduction is more your taste.

Selling your old furniture is often overlooked as a great way to offset some of your cost. Those who both buy and sell furniture, leverage the remaining value of their old furniture to reduce the overall impact of the change in furniture. When you are buying new furniture as a replacement, you need to do something with your old furniture. Some people will put it in storage, some will give it away, and still others will take it to the dump. As they say, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.

Selling it is a smart decision. You make room for your new furniture and avoid the hassle and possible expense of storage. There are different ways to sell your furniture and make some extra cash. You can go online and list your furniture in classifieds or online auctions. You can also advertise your furniture in your local newspapers for good results. Another option is selling your used furniture to thrift stores or at a flea market. A garage sale is another common option for selling used furniture.

The internet is just another option your have when it comes to buying and selling furniture. You can find new or used furniture that you can buy online. This is a great way to get the variety and selection you are looking for. There are many places that you can post a free ad online to sell furniture. When selling furniture, make sure you write a good ad that stresses its benefits to the reader. A well written ad can make all the difference in response rate. It is also important to set a fair price for your furniture. If you overprice it, you may scare away all prospective buyers. People are looking for a good deal when searching online for used furniture. With the ease of locating furniture deals and locating good buyers online, someone could certainly buy and sell furniture as a business in itself.
