Relocation Check List – How To Have A Successful House Move

Four weeks ahead of the moving day
Time for some house clearance! Create of list of the items you would like to take with you to the new place and give everything else to your family and friends, or even charity.
Take the telephone, get some removals quotes and make the removals booking. Ask you family/friends whether they know any good removal companies. Sometimes a man with a van removal company might be able to do the removalfor you at a very good price. Sort out all required procedures with the removal firm.
Print out a list of the utility firms that need notifying and ring them up to tell them about your move.
In the case that you are renting, let your landlord know that you are moving as most accommodation contracts require at least one month notice. Even if it is not necessary to give notice this early, it is a nice gesture to let your landlord know in advance.
Purchase all packing materials that you may require for the relocation such as wrapping papers, tapes and boxes.
Two weeks before the move date
Begin with items you don’t often use (which often are many!) so you don’t have spend time packing when there are many other things to worry about later on.
Make a list of your most used items and where they will fit in your new house.
Call the removal service provider to confirm the moving time and date, locations, and notify them if there is any change with regard to number of items, required service or any details which have been agreed.
Notify your local authority about your move so they will stop sending council tax letters to your current address.
Ask your post office service to redirect your mails. This service normally costs some money, depending on how long you want to use the mail redirection service.
7 days before the move
Begin packing remaining items except for those you will need until the moving day.
Create a list of friends, family, relatives and companies, authorities that you want to inform about your move.
Arrange the last electricity and metre readings and pay any outstanding bills relating to your current home.
Cancel or redirect all deliveries such as newspapers, magazines, milk.
Keep passports, jewellery, driving license and other valuable and important items in a safe place.
Buy a new TV license or move the current TV license to your new home.
The day before your moving date
Complete all final packing and prepare a survival kit with essential items such as toilet paper, mugs, tea bags, spare light bulbs etc.
Check with your utility firms whether you have got electricity, gas, telephone, Internet, TV in the new home.
Disconnect all unused appliances and defrost the fridge/freezer.
Clean the place and leave a nice welcome card for the new owners together with some takeaway menus and instructions they may need.
Have a good sleep to prepare yourself for the moving day!
The moving day
Call your home removal firm to ensure they are not running late.
Turn off electricity, gas and water supplies carefully and disconnect all appliances.
Lock all windows, doors and any other entrances to the house.
After loading everything on removal vehicles, have a quick look inside to ensure you do not leave anything behind.
Arrival at the new home
Put the removal boxes to the correct rooms/places they planned to be.
Start unpacking from the most relevant, especially the survival kit.
Check and make sure electricity, gas, water, TV, Internet, telephone and other utilities are running.
